Name: Philippe Soupault
Year of Birth & Death: (1897 - 1990)
Biography: A french political activist and writer. He played a significant role in the Dadaist movement and became one of the founding members of the Surrealist movement. One of his first books was a book of automatic writing with André Breton called Les champs magnétiques (1920). Soupault wrote first hand accounts of the rise of Hitler in Germany and he was imprisoned by the Nazi's during WWII. He did travel to the US but later returned to France after the war. He was excluded from the Surrealist movement in 1926 for “crimes against literature”. His works ranged from plays to critical studies although he though of himself primarily as a poet.
