Hirschfield began working as a shoemaker and later turned to painting shortly before World War II. His work was discovered by Sidney Janis in 1939, and later by the Surrealist Group. His paintings were very linear, and some have even called them naïve, but the Surrealists held them in high regard. Hirschfield’s works include “Zebras” (1942).
