Name: Arshile Gorky
Year of Birth & Death: (1904 - 1948)
Biography: Born in America as Vosdanig Adoian, he studied at the Polytechnic Institute at Tiflis in Georgia from 1916 to 1918. He went to New York, and after many classes, became a teacher of drawing at the New York School of Design from 1926 to 1931, and then later at the Grand Central School of Art. He was under the influence of cubism and abstractionism, until he discovered Miro and met the surrealist group in New York in 1924. He settled in Sherman, Connecticut, in 1945, and, where he was met with a series of tragic event that eventually led to his suicide. His last pictures were of American abstract expressionism.
